SSDI is social security income for those who have a history of employment and provides benefits to widow/er and children of insured workers. SSDI amount is based on the earnings history of wage earner, age when benefits began. Additionally, an individual is eligible for Medicare (parts A and B) 24 months after qualifying for SSDI. Medicare A will pay for Doctor visits, some home health care and durable medical equipment. Medicare part B will pay for hospital costs. Medicare does not provide prescription coverage. There is a monthly premium deducted from the SSDI check for Medicare parts A and B. If an individual also qualifies for Medicaid, this will pay the premium. SSA provides benefits under two programs: Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). SSI benefits are paid to those who qualify as aged (65 or older), blind or disabled. Social Security benefits may be paid to those who have retired or become bing or disabled and their qualifying spouses and children. Deceased persons’ spouses or children may also qualify for benefits. Social Security provides Medicare to those who have received disability benefits for two years or who are 65 years old.

SSI is basically Social Security income for people who are not eligible for SSDI - do not have a long history of employment. SSI is economic needs based. The amount depends on living situation, earnings and unearned income. The big deal with SSI, is that if you are eligible or already receiving SSI, you are eligible for Medicaid, which offers immediate and comprehensive coverage of medical services and prescriptions ($2 co-pay). There is no cost for Medicaid.
